GENRAL ANESTHETIC/HOSPITAL

We understand that dental visits can be overwhelming and can cause high levels of anxiety for some patients especially if extensive procedures like Wisdom tooth surgery is involved.  This distress may cause patients to avoid visiting a dentist and seeking treatment required to improve not only their oral health but general health as well.

At Crescent Dental we are passionate about providing the best possible care to our patients in a calm comfortable way so that they can be their best. For this reason we offer conscious sedation and general anaesthetic dentistry to our patients. You can decide between either going completely to sleep through you’re a dental procedure at the hospital or have the procedure done with relative analgesia and Nitrous Oxide.

Patients wishing to have their procedures done, while completely asleep (through general anaesthetic) are done at the private hospital. You would need to have an initial consultation at our clinic, in which we will assess you medical and dental histories, do a complete dental examination and take any x-rays if required.   After that we can make arrangements at the private hospital where Dr. Babi would provide treatment while you are asleep.  Dr. Babi is one of the few dentists in Dubbo accredited to work at the private hospital.

Most patients are admitted to the hospital as day only patients and unsually discharged with in a few hours of the procedure.

With general anaesthetic patients area a lot mote comfortable as there is no discomfort associated with complex procedures. You can sleep through the entire dental procedure with out encountering the sight, smell and sounds associated with a dental visit thus easing fear and anxiety. The other advantage is that we can complete multiple dental treatments in one session thus preventing several visits.

General Anaesthetic is very safe for adults and children alike. In fact it is preferred means of treatment for children as they will not undergo the distress of a dental visit and will not create a negative image about dentistry in their mind for future.

An estimate for dental treatment with general anaesthetic can be provided at the time of you initial consultation. Patients with Private Health Insurance are advised to consult should consult their insurance company regarding any rebates/assistance for treatment provided under general anaesthetic in the hospital setting.

We understand that a visit to the dentist could sometimes be distressing and that is why we try our best that your experience with us is a pleasant one. So from the moment you call our practice, we try to make you feel at ease and our kind and caring staff members are always there to answer questions, concerns and help you out where ever possible.

Sometimes a treatment or a procedure may sound unpleasant which can cause anxiety in one’s mind, which could be a great source of stress. Mostly this stress/anxiety stems from a bad childhood experiences which is engraved in you memory or being anxious about a dental injection. It could also be due to a feeling that you may be judged by the doctor, as being the worst mouth they have seen or just the feeling of a dental chair makes you uneasy.

If you feel any of the above, the best thing that you could do is to talk to us. We will make sure that we can help you overcome this feeling of distress. You need to be with a dentist you are comfortable with. This way you can talk to us about any concerns or fearful feelings you have. However keep in mind that nowadays dentistry has come a long way and modern treatments are more painless than ever before. There is a wide variety of pain control that we can offer which can include pre-operative pain medication, anxiety relief medication, painless injections, Relative analgesia and conscious sedation.

Dental Local anaesthetic has been administered the same way (with a manual syringes and \needle)since the 19thcentury. Now technology has even changed the way we administer anaesthesia. The Computer Assisted Anaesthesia System is an alternative to standard injections (local anaesthetic) to control pain during clinic procedures.

Conventional methods of anaesthetic delivery create pressure when anaesthesia is injected which results in a lot of pain. Our computer assisted local anaesthetic system controls the flow rate ofthe anaesthesia into the gum, minimising pain and anxiety. For many people the main reason of associating an unpleasant experience with dental treatment is the need for an injection to be numbed up and not the actual procedure itself.

At Crescent Dental we take advantage of new technology and Computer Assisted Anaesthesia System to make sure that your appointment with us is as comfortable as possible. It also allows us to offer our patients a painless and more comfortable experience, which is well ahead of the traditional dentistry. Another advantage of using this system is that we are able to numb the tooth being operated on individually and because there is minimal residual numbness and patients are able to get back to their life without a numb face.

Dental injections may cause discomfort for many reasons:

  • It could be due to the location of the mouth being numbed. Some area of the mouth have a tougher gum covering and hurt more.
  • Injection speed: When the solution in the needle is forcefully injected into the tissue is can cause a lot of pain.
  • Needle insertion: The initial breaching of skin by the needle also causes pain however usually this is like a pin prick which only lasts a few seconds.

There are a few steps that we can take to minimize or n some cases remove the pain altogether:

  • Using a computer controlled anaesthetic system – This technique is more precise and far less painful than conventional injections. The secret is the intelligent and gentle administration of anaesthetic solution, which starts at a very slow flow rate and then gradually increases in speed. This means that there isn’t any pressure created while injecting which is the main cause of pain. We are able to administer slowly and more accurately.
  • We can numb you with numbing pallet before even the initial prick so you don’t even feel that.
  • There is evidence that if injection is at or near body temperature it is far less painful as it can pass through tissue easily.

At Crescent Dental we work hard to provide a friendly and relaxing atmosphere, so patients of all ages feel at ease. We know that people especially children are not excited about visiting the dentist, but we will do our best to make sure you have a pleasant and stress-free experience.

What is Penthrox?

Penthrox(also known as the green whistle) is an inhaler used to reduce feelings of pain and anxiety. It is self-administered and makes you more relaxed and calm during a dental procedure. It takes upto 6-8breaths to attain the desired levels of pain and anxiety relief. Penthrox is a very effective drug as it acts very fast and is completely safe. As the patient holds the inhaler during an appointment, it is completely in their control to administer the drug when you feel you need it.  Generally, patients do not feel any unpleasant side effects however, after your appointment there would be a need for someone to drive you back home as you may experience aftereffects.
