Tooth Implant Procedure

To replace a missing tooth an artificial titanium root will be inserted into the jawbone. This will hold the tooth in place. Then the osseointegration process begins where the titanium and jawbone fuse together. Osseointegration keeps the tooth implant anchored permanently in place.

For each patient the time required to complete the treatment is different and depends on multiple factors (quality/quantity of bone in the area, history of infection, associated medical conditions). For most patients, the whole process is very straight forward and will take around three or four appointments over three to five months.

It all starts with your initial consultation with us in which we would do a through examination (encompassing the examination of the site, as well as any medical conditions that may modify our treatment approach), explain the advantages/disadvantages, take a photographic record as well as 3D scan of your teeth. After that a radiographic scan will be done which will show us the correct dimensions and quality of bone as well as help plan the proper orientation of the implant. These scans are uploaded in our software and are used to assisted in 3 Dimensional planning of your implant in the available bone. In some cases, a bone graft might have to be placed if there is not enough bone, which can effect treatment time. If this an the case we will discuss this with you.

The next stage is to surgically place the implant in the jaw. This is usually done under Local anaesthetics. If a tooth extraction is required at the site we may have to wait for 2-3 months to let the area heal before an implant is placed, however in some cases we may be able to place the implant on the same day if there is enough bone. Once the implant is embedded it is left under the gum to heal for up to 3 months after which a post/abutment is attached to the implant. Lastly a crown is attached to the abutment, which then functions similar to a natural tooth.
